Many Republican politicians and General Stanley McChrystal delude themselves that they should, and will be allowed by the American people to, maintain American troops indefinitely in Afghanistan.
They’re wrong. The Afghan war is becoming increasingly unpopular with the American people and European nations (which don’t buy the myth that the war is absolutely necessary to protect the US and Europe). Politicians are no longer able to continue this war while not suffering its electoral consequences.
So McChrystal should try to win this war quickly – before the American electorate chooses a pro-withdrawal President.
